October 25, 2013

Good morning.

We have just concluded a pretty busy week – Parent Conferences, Red Ribbon week activities and Book Fair.  I was reviewing this in my head last night while driving home.  The successful completion of such a week is a direct result of contributions and efforts by numerous people on our staff who work behind “the scenes.”
I would like to take a moment to recognize our entire staff (teachers, custodians, office staff, counselors, TAs and admins) for their contributions and support.  In particular, I wanted you to be aware of the following folks who took the lead on each:
  • ·         Dr. Tiffany Taylor-Johnson (Associate Principal), Mary LoBosco (AP Secretary) and Joe Kleine (Technology Teacher) – Parent Conferences.
  • ·         Narcisse Laidlaw (Librarian) and Ann Mohrmann (Library Secretary) – Book Fair.
  • ·         Beth Mothersbaugh, Janey Worthington and Roger Scherck (Counselors) – Red Ribbon Week.

I am blessed to be surrounded by great people.

Film Screening (new)
The Diversity Cadre at LMS is thrilled to be sponsoring a screening of the documentary Jim Crow to Barack Obama on Thursday, November 21 at 3:15.  Presented in cooperation with Cinema St. Louis and the 22nd Annual St. Louis International Film Festival’s Cinema for Students (CFS) Program, Jim Crow to Barack Obama is a documentary featuring intergenerational conversations between African American elders who grew up in the now extinct era of Jim Crow and youth ages sixteen through thirty.
This documentary asks us to wrestle with the question: “How have issues of race and racism changed in the United States over the last one hundred years?”
The screening will be followed with a question and answer session with the director, Denise Ward Brown.
Please consider attending this event.  The screening will be held in the LMS Cafeteria on November 21 and will begin at 3:15 pm.  The question and answer session with the director will follow and the entire event should conclude before 6 pm.

6th Grade Party/Volunteer Request (new)
The parents who are coordinating the 6th Grade Party, scheduled for October 31, have created a volunteer sign up.  The link for this is http://www.timetosignup.com/laduemiddleschool/signupsheet/20776
Please direct questions to Susie Sachs at 314-452-0808.

Girls On Track (new)
Girls On Track, an after school running club for LMS girls, will return in the spring.  Lisa Witzofsky, one of the parent volunteers, is currently looking for a few other parents to commit to one practice day per week.  If you are interested and/or need additional information, please contact Lisa at blwitz@charter.net or at 314-989-1993.

Book Fair (conclusion)
Thank you to Scholastic Book Fair co-chairs Elizabeth Allen and Carrie Stempin for their help in making this year’s Book Fair an absolute success.  Also, thank you to all of the parent volunteers who worked at the Book Fair this past week.  Final numbers are not available yet, but we are very grateful for your support.

Parent Conferences (conclusion)
Thank you to all who attended Conferences this past two days.  I realize that the “Speed Dating/Musical Chairs” format for Core Team conferences does not allow time for extended conversations.  If there are questions or issues you need to discuss further with your child’s Core Team, please contact them by email or phone.  Each team has a common planning period each day, which can be used for meetings with parents.
If you were unable to attend Parent Conferences, we will work to mail your child’s grades as soon as possible in the coming week.

Red Ribbon Week (repeat)
Red Ribbon Week, LMS' annual campaign to promote drug-free living and positive decision-making, began this past Wednesday, October 23 and extends through Halloween.  Students may wear “spirit wear” each day in support of that day’s theme.  For the coming week:
Monday, October 28 - “The Hero in Me is Drug-free” Day: Dress like your favorite superhero, with capes, tights, face paint (no masks), comic book T-shirts, etc.
Tuesday, October 29 - “Don’t Let Drugs Into Your Dreams” Day: Protect your dreams by wearing cozy pajamas and/or carrying your teddy bear to school.
Wednesday, October 30 - “Drugs Are Tacky, Let’s Be Wacky” Day: Be your true self; don’t “dress to impress.”  Wear mismatched clothes and crazy hair.

Do not think for one minute that you will see me in tights or pajamas next week during morning traffic duty.

I hope you have a great day and weekend.

Parent Conference corrections/update

Good morning.  I hope you had a great weekend.

This will be an Early Release day for students, at 12:40 pm.
Conferences begin at 1:20 pm.
Core Team teachers will have their dinner break from 4:20 to 5:00 pm.

  • When you arrive, please come to the Welcome Center lobby to collect your student's grades and any other information needed.  Staff and students will be available to help you find team/teacher locations.
  • Conferences are scheduled with Core Team teachers in 20 minute increments.  This will allow an average of 5 minutes with each of the Core Team teachers.  If more time is needed with a particular teacher, it is recommended that a subsequent meeting be scheduled.
  • Elective/Explo/Off Team teachers will be located in the Gym.  Each teacher will have an easel for sign ups.  Conferences with these teachers are on a first come, first served basis.
  • Plan on visiting the Elective/Explo/Off Team teachers before or after your Core Team appointment (see above for END times each evening).
  • The approximate time to allocate to meet with all 8 teachers is 1 hour, which includes 1) 20 minutes with the Core Team, 2) 10-15 minutes to travel to and from the Core Team location to the Gym and time to sign up for conferences on the easels provided, and 3) 20 minutes to meet with Elective/Explo/Off Team teachers.

Book Fair (new)
The LMS Book Fair is scheduled for the coming week.  An amazing selection of books will be available – the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents.  Over 400 additional titles are available online (at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/laduemiddleschool) for your convenience.  And, you can also contribute books to your student’s classroom library by purchasing a book on the teacher’s wish list.

Parent Conferences (new)
As I hope you are aware, Parent Conferences are scheduled for next Wednesday (3:50 to 7:40 pm) and Thursday (1:00 to 6:40 pm).  Wednesday is a regular/full day for students and Thursday is an Early Release Day ending at 12:40 pm.
When you arrive, please come to the main Welcome Center Lobby to collect your student’s grades and any other information that we will provide.  Staff and students will be on hand to direct you to your conference location.
Conferences are scheduled with Core Team teachers (Communication Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science – all in one room) in 20 minute increments.  When you arrive for your conference, it is our plan to have you meet with each Core Team teacher for approximately 5 minutes.  A former administrator once described this process as similar to “speed dating.”  Although this does not provide an extended period of time, it should allow discussion regarding current performance and recommendations.  If more time is needed with a particular teacher or teachers, we will work with you to set up an alternate meeting date and time (our Core Teams share common plan periods).  Please be aware that Core Team teachers have a scheduled dinner break on Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:10 pm and on Thursday from 4:20 to 5:00 pm.
Elective/PE teachers will be located in the LMS Gym.  You may sign up on large easels for conferences with these folks on a first come, first served basis.  Please be aware that dinner breaks for Elective/PE teachers are 5:10 to 5:50 pm on Wednesday and 5:00 to 5:40 pm on Thursday.  This may affect whether you try to see these teachers before or after your scheduled Core Team conference.

Report cards/Parent Conferences (repeat)
The last day of Quarter 1 was October 11.  Report cards will be handed out at Parent Conferences on October 23 and 24.  If you would like to view your child’s grades prior to that date, you may access them through the Infinite Campus parent portal beginning on October 16.  Your student can also access this information as well for you.  If you are not able to attend Parent Conferences, your child’s grades will be mailed on October 28.  Should you not have parent portal access, please contact Peggy Briedenbach at 993-3900.
As a reminder, you may be still able to sign up for open time slots through our LMS website at http://www.ladue.k12.mo.us/lms/ if you have not done so already.   Signups have been available since August 9.

Red Ribbon Week (new)
Red Ribbon Week, LMS' annual campaign to promote drug-free living and positive decision-making, begins next Wednesday, October 23 and extends through Halloween.  Students may wear “spirit wear” each day in support of that day’s theme;
Wednesday, 10/23 - Wear red to promote drug-free living
Thursday, October 24 - “Slam Dunk, Drugs Are Junk” Day: Wear team jerseys, shirts, hats, etc. in the spirit of drug-free living.

7th Grade Kansas City Trip/Medications (repeat)
Mrs. Haley Pepper, our School Nurse, will be available during Parent Teacher Conferences in the 7th Grade hallway to collect medication(s) for the upcoming Kansas City trip.  We encourage parents to bring medication(s) with you when you attend conferences.  Please bring medication in its original packaging and only enough for the trip.  If you have multi-dose medications, such as eye drops, nasal spray or inhalers, you may drop these off on the morning of the trip IF you notify the nurse at least one week in advance.  Over the counter medication(s) will need to have a physician’s order.  A current prescription label for all prescription medications will be accepted in lieu of a physician’s order.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Pepper at 314-983-5516.

Speaker Series (repeat)
The Girls in the Know speaker series will be available to LMS mothers and daughters this fall.  This educational speaker series is a unique opportunity for important ‘teen” information to be delivered by female professionals side by side to mothers and daughters.  When girls have positive communication at home they report it helps them establish individual values, make healthier decisions, develop a stronger sense of self while experiencing less depression and anxiety.

After School Sporting Events/Games (upcoming)
There are some procedural items I want to bring up for your consideration in the next week or so regarding student supervision after school and attendance at LMS sporting events.  Time is short now and I would like to be thoughtful in how I communicate our questions or concerns.  Please look for this in coming communications.

Best wishes,

Greg

October 11, 2013

Good afternoon:
I am looking out my office window at a glorious afternoon.  I hope you have the chance to enjoy the great weather today at some point.
The week, although busy with Picture Re-Takes, Fundraiser assemblies, and the end of the Quarter, went pretty well.  We did have a bat in our Gym on Wednesday morning right before re-takes were to begin on the Stage.  Our staff did a great job of 1) re-routing arriving students to other locations, 2) sealing the Gym, and 3) contacting Animal Control.  I am pleased to announce that the bat left LMS in good shape.  Picture re-takes were delayed for only a short amount of time.  Administrator classes don’t often include a chapter on bats, so the best one can do in these situations is “wing” it . . . . I am truly sorry about that.

PeachJar (update)
A link to the PeachJar program described last week is now at the bottom of the LMS website page.
Junior Rams Baseball Exploratory Initiative (update)
As previously announced, the LMS Dad’s Club is working with various members of the Ladue School District to evaluate our community’s interest in establishing a Junior Ram’s Baseball program for children in grades five through eight. The LMS Dad’s Club created a short on-line survey (
Junior Rams Baseball Survey) to help ensure that any Junior Rams baseball program is shaped and molded to best meet the goals and objectives of the LMS and Fifth Grade Center community. Participation in the survey has been very encouraging, as we have had 65 parents log on thus far to share their thoughts about what is most important to them in establishing a potential Junior Rams baseball program. For those that have responded – thank you. For all of the rest – you have until midnight Monday October 14th to make your voice heard. The survey results will be tabulated on Tuesday October 15th and will be presented to the community at a meeting held in the LMS cafeteria on Monday October 21st at 7:00 p.m. Joining us at the meeting will be Rob Garrett, the Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Ladue High School and Physical Education Instructor at the Fifth Grade Center, potentially along with other invited guests. The purpose of the meeting is present the survey results to the community and discuss possible options for the Spring 2014 baseball season.  As evidenced by the Cardinals pursuit of their 12th World Series championship, Saint Louis and the Ladue Schools community are fortunate to be at the epicenter of “baseball heaven”. This is a great opportunity for you to fall back in love with America’s true pastime and help start a new tradition of baseball excellence for the Ladue Junior Rams.  For questions or additional information, please contact the President of the LMS Dad’s Club – Joe Mulligan – at 314-503-4384 or at joemulligan910@gmail.com.
Pictures (follow up)
If you have and questions regarding the picture and re-take process, Wagner Portrait Group asks that you contact them at 314-567-5900.
