Sixth Grade Camp (THIS COMING WEEK)
Information went home this past week with students (please check if you haven’t seen it yet) regarding what to pack for camp as well as the three choice activities that your child will be participating in.  You can also check our school website for a recommended packing list, brochures, location, etc.  Your student was also given a colored ribbon that will act as your child’s luggage tag.  Please attach it to your child’s luggage, so your child’s belongings are sent to the correct cabin.  If the luggage ribbon gets lost, extra ribbons will be available when your child gets to school the morning of camp.

Laduette Dance Clinic (new)
The nationally ranked LHWHS Laduette dance team will hold their third annual dance clinic on Saturday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the LHWHS main Gym.  This will be open to students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade.  A special dance presentation for parents will be held at 1:00 p.m.
National hip hop finalists in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the Laduettes placed first at the UDA Dance Camp, earning a bid to Nationals for the fifth year in a row.
Registration forms can be obtained in the LMS Office.  Completed forms with payment can be returned to LMS through Friday, October 4.  Cost for the clinic is $45, which includes lunch, a t-shirt and a photo with frame of your child.  Checks may be made out to Laduette Dance Team.  For questions, contact:
·      Kim Bussard – kimbussard@sbcglobal.net or 314-283-6484.
·      Debbie Taryle – dls627@sbcglobal.net or 314-432-1281.
·      Jodi Kaplan – jlkaplan200@msn.com or 314-280-0932.

National Junior Honor Society (new)
In January, a packet will be mailed to 7th and 8th Grade students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or above, six or more O’s, and no I’s or U’s (Citizenship Grades) for the first semester.
Students who are eligible for selection must:
·      Have a minimum of 15 hours of community service.
·      Complete the Candidate Form, including sections on School Activities, Community Activities, Community Service and Honors/Awards.  Documentation should include contact names, email and or phone numbers.
·      Not have been assigned to BIC or have had an out of school suspension during the current school year.
If all of the above requirements are met by the deadline stated on the Candidate Form, the application will be reviewed by the selection committee.  The completion of the form does not automatically guarantee admittance into the National Junior Honor Society.
It is never too early to start those community service hours!  Get started now, so you are not rushed to get them finished after packets have been distributed.  Suggestions of places to earn community service hours are listed on the NJHS webpage, located under “Activities” on the LMS website.
If you have any questions regarding the process, please contact Laila Crabtree or Laurie Lambie.

7th Grade Party (new)
7th graders are encouraged to join in the fun of music, food, optional costume contest with prizes and more on Tuesday, October 29 from 3:10 to 4:10pm in the LMS cafeteria and gym.  Late buses will be available for transportation.  Wrist bands may be purchased for only $3 during lunch on October 23, 24, 28 and 29.  NOTE: Parents are needed to volunteer to sell tickets at lunch on ticket sale days.  If you can help, please contact Jackie King at j.king@charter.net Parents are also needed to help set up/chaperone the party and assist with quick clean up.  Please contact Marjie Chuchola at marjiemarie@charter.net if you are able to lend a hand at the party!

Halloween (new)
Students may wear Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, October 31.  We ask that costumes be appropriate for school, not include items that resemble weapons, and that students not wear masks/items that cover their faces.

The LMS Dad’s Club will hold its first meeting on Monday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the LMS Library to cover the following:

PE Department Recognition (repeat/additional information)
As previously communicated, LMS has been recognized as one of three Character Fitness Model Schools by Character Plus (Cooperating School Districts) and the St. Louis Rams.  As a result, we had a celebratory assembly last spring with Rams Tackle Rodger Saffold in attendance and Jason Theodosiou, one of our PE Department members, presented at the Missouri Character Education Conference in the summer.
This past Tuesday, Jason and Stephanie O’Neal had an opportunity to present different examples of character fitness embedded in our physical education program to local teachers and administrators at Rams Park.
Congratulations again to all the members of our Physical Education Department for an outstanding job.

PE Department/LMSPA – Climbing Wall (repeat? – can’t remember)
Due to the efforts of our PE Department, spearheaded by Jason Stendeback, and the generosity of the LMSPA, our climbing wall in the Gym should be completed within the next month.  This will offer a great alternative to our students in terms of our overall fitness program and curriculum.

LMS Dad's Club Meeting Septebmer 30, 2013

As predicted, I failed to include the following notice last Friday.

The LMS Dad's Club will be meeting in the LMS Library at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30 to discuss the following agenda:

  • Meet existing and welcome new members of the LMS Dad's Club.
  • Brief overview of who we are and what we do.
  • Discuss our historic social activities and events.
  • Plan calendar of events for the school year.
  • Lastly, we have invited Rob Garrett, Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Ladue High School, to discuss exploratory initiatives in establishing a Junior Rams baseball program at LMS.  If you have a child at LMS interested in playing baseball, this is a terrific opportunity to learn more about our initiatives and provide valuable feedback.

I hope you've had a good weekend.

September 13, 2013

Good afternoon and Happy Friday:

For some strange reason, this five-day week has gone much faster than the previous four-day week.  Maybe testing this week, resulting in longer class periods and fewer passing times, had something to do with it.
I have been toying with how I should structure these messages over the past few days.  I want to try to make it simpler for all, based upon information I think I would want as a parent.  For those of you who really need only the calendar updates, I will put them first so that you don’t need to scroll down through all the verbiage and random thoughts.  I’ll try to delete those items from the completed week and add those I think are relevant, always at least a month or so ahead.  Next will come “new” messages or updates.  Lastly will be some selected items I think need to be repeated.  I hope this works for you.  Please let me know if it doesn’t.

Upcoming Calendar Events:

Weather Bug/Announcements (new)
As you may be aware, LMS is now a Weather Bug (free smart phone app) reporting site.  This is a result of the efforts of 6th Grade Science Teacher Kathleen Murphy, who has a monitor with real-time weather data in her classroom.
“Murph” has been sending down one to two 6th Graders each morning to read the day’s weather forecast on our daily announcements.  I mention this part because it gives our announcements a “kid-centered” aspect and I also get such a kick out of it.  They have been great, particularly when they announce two days in a row – the first day is all nerves compared to the second, when they walk right into my office like old pros.

Traffic Tweaks (new)
Katie R. (our TA who directs traffic at the “bottom” of the Circle Drive) and I have been playing around a bit with our morning traffic routine.  Since most buses don’t begin arriving until around 7:55 a.m., we have been routing cars through the Circle Drive early in an attempt to get you on and off our campus quicker.  Once the first bus is sited coming down either Clayton or Conway, I radio Katie to divert cars toward the back lot to drop off near the Gym, then exit onto Clayton.
I thought you might be curious when Katie asks you to take the longer route.  Once all buses have arrived and unloaded, we then will direct cars back to the Circle and front entrance.  I hope this works to your benefit.

Yearbooks On Sale (new)
Yearbooks are on sale now.  Orders can be placed by going to www.yearbookordercenter.com and entering #8647 to order (or there is a link under the Activities tab on the LMS webpage) or they can be ordered by phone at 1-866-287-3096.  Please email any questions to Sharrie Cognac, one of our yearbook sponsors.

Parent Teacher Conferences (repeat)
Fall Parent Conferences are scheduled for October 23 and 24.  If you have not done so already, you may be able to sign up for open time slots through our LMS website at http://www.ladue.k12.mo.us/lms/

Hosted by Mark and Jodi Blucher - Time to be announced.
8th Grade Parent Party - Date and time to be announced
Hosted by John and Jill Farmer
Please watch for more communications with addresses, start times and items to bring.

School Picture Re-Takes (repeat)
If for some reason your child is absent on August 28, we will have a Re-Take Day on Wednesday, October 9.  Should you need another order form, there are extras in the Welcome Center Office.
If you have questions, concerns or special requests, please direct them to Wagner Portrait Groups at 314-567-5900.

Bus Passes (repeat)
As previously communicated, please be aware that we cannot issue bus passes for the following buses until further notice:  L3, L5, L7, L9, L10, L16, L17, and L20.

Bus Behaviors (repeat)
I also want you to be aware that we are in the process of addressing some negative bus behaviors that have come to our attention recently.  Specifically, we are targeting inappropriate language, throwing items on/out of the bus, and the “saving” of seats based upon grade level (i.e. the 8th graders reserving portions of a bus).
We have reviewed our expectations over morning announcements and followed up with specific discussions during classes.  I would greatly appreciate you reinforcing with your children, if they ride a bus to/from school, that we want everyone to have a safe, positive experience.  Actions that are detrimental to a safe bus ride will be addressed through our discipline policy and may, if deemed appropriate, result in suspension from the bus for a period of time.  Your help in this would be valuable.

As always, my apologies if I have made mistakes or omissions.

I hope you have a great weekend.  Go Cards.  Go Rams.

Greg
