March 8, 2015

Good morning on this glorious Sunday!  I hope each of you has had the chance to get out from winter hibernation and enjoy the warmer temperatures.  The sunlight streaming in through my office window here at school feels great at the moment.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS

Congratulations to Donovon Moore, grade 8, who is advancing to the state level of the National Geographic Bee.  Donovon will be competing at University of Missouri-Columbia on March 27. Good Luck to Donovon!

Eileen Duncan and Katherine Zoellner are finalists in the Haan Crafts Design-A-Pillow Contest!  Their designs are the Fox and the Gingerbread Man.  The winner receives a $100 gift card and will have their design made into a kit that will be available for students all over the country to order beginning next fall.  In order to help, please go on Facebook to Haan Crafts, go to the contest page and "like" a project.

2014-2015 Ladue Middle School Yearbook - Ordering deadline extended!
Great news!  If you haven't yet ordered a 2014-2015 Ladue Middle School yearbook, you can still place an order.  The yearbook publisher, Herff Jones, has extended the ordering deadline for our school's yearbook this year.  The site will now be open until March 31, 2015.
The LMS students on the yearbook committee have been working hard all year under the guidance of LMS yearbook faculty sponsors Joan Shacklette and Sharrie Cognac to put together lots of great information, photos and memories from this school year at LMS.
Yearbooks will be distributed at school in May, and students will have opportunities to sign each other's yearbooks on the last day of school.  The price of the LMS yearbook is $28.00.
Click here to place an online order:

Any questions about LMS yearbook purchases can be directed to Sharrie Cognac at scognac@ladueschools.net.

Grade 8 Spring Sports
8th grade sports: Students were able to sign up on Friday for field hockey (girls) or track and field (co-ed).  The first track practice is Tuesday, March 10; the first field hockey practice is Tuesday, March 24.  If your child would like to participate and did not sign up, please email Coach Jason Theodosiou (jtheodosiou@ladueschools.net) and let him know.  All students who want to participate must have forms turned in (find them under the activities tab on the LMS website or in the Welcome Center).  If your child has already turned the forms in for another sport this year, they are already on file.
REPEAT ITEMS

Food Allergy Notice
Chartwells, the district's food service provider, has advised the district that on February 19, 2015, the FDA issued a consumer alert for people highly allergic or sensitive to peanuts, advising these individuals to avoid products containing ground cumin or cumin powder, as some shipments of these products have tested positive for undeclared peanut protein.  Based on this information, Chartwells has removed all foods containing cumin from menus/foods for peanut-allergic students and "peanut free" schools.  For more information see the post: "FDA Alert Regarding Cumin and Peanut Allergies" on the front page of the district's website

8th Grade Girls/Laduette Dance Team
There will be a clinic for 8th grade girls interested in becoming part of the Laduette Dance Team for next year.  Girls do not need to attend this clinic to try out, but it is recommended.  Laduette coaches will help girls learn dance techniques and prepare for tryouts.  The clinic will occur March 10, from 5 – 7 pm, at the West Campus/Fifth Grade Center dance studio.  Cost for this clinic is $20, cash or check payable to Laduette Dance Team.
An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 11, during 8th grade lunch at LMS in room 135.

Spring Student-Led Portfolio Conferences
Spring Portfolio Conferences are scheduled for March 11 (3:50 – 7:10 pm) and March 12 (1:20 – 7 pm).  A handout with specifics is attached to the Blackboard Connect update email and will be sent home with students on Tuesday of next week.  Information will also be posted on our school website.
Sign ups are online and can be accessed through the following website:  https://www.myconferencetime.com/laduems/
Please sign up ASAP as appointments fill up fast.  The deadline for signing up is March 6, 2015
To ensure your conference runs smoothly here are a few reminders:
1.  Plan to be at conferences for at least an hour.  Your child will review his/her portfolio for a total of 20 minutes with a brief check-in provided by the team teachers. The other time will be spent meeting with the elective and/or off team teachers following a similar format.  Plan to arrive on time. If you arrive late, we may not be able to accommodate you.
2. Please bring your child with you, as he/she will be leading the conference.   Teachers do not facilitate the conference as in the fall.
3. Upon arrival, please stop at the table in the lobby to pick up a Conference Room Location sheet. This will help you know where you are going.
4. Note the meal break for teachers/staff and plan accordingly. All teachers will have a 40-minute dinner break on 3/12 from 2:40 - 3:20 pm.

Current 7th grade students/Immunizations for next year
Students entering 8th grade in the state of Missouri are required to receive the TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) immunization.  This is usually given by a doctor at age 11 or 12.  If your child has not received this immunization, please consult your physician.  If you have records showing that your child has received it, please provide them to the nurse's office.

Board Briefs
Information regarding Ladue Board of Education meetings and work sessions can be found on boardbriefs.blogspot.com

I hope you and your families have a great upcoming week and have plans to enjoy Spring Break.  I am looking forward to joining my wife, kids (33 and 22), extended family and dogs this coming Friday for several days of trout fishing.  I don’t typically catch many, but we do enjoy getting everyone together and acting silly.

Have a great remainder to your weekend.

Greg
