February 8, 2016

Good morning.  I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

Some have already noted that we have a conflict in our upcoming calendar.  On February 26, we have our last Ski Trip of the year and the LMS Musical at 7 PM in the LHWHS Performing Arts Center.
If did not have to cancel our first Ski Trip due to Hidden Valley not opening, originally scheduled for January 8, this would not be an issue.  As it is, dates for ski trips and the available of the Performing Arts Center are both limited and these were our best opportunities.  My apologies if this causes any problems.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS
On Saturday, January 30, twenty-three LMS students competed in the regional MCTM mathematics contest at Selvidge Middle School.  Thirteen of these students will move on to compete individually at the state level on Saturday, April 2, along with our team which placed first.  The students who placed in the top ten in the individual categories will compete at state.  Congratulations to coach Nancy Chambers and all of our students who participated in last Saturday’s competition:
6th grade:
Will Bender (2nd), Iris Zhou (3rd), Samuel Chen (6th), Daniel Xu (7th), Aditya Kondepudi (10th), Michael Cao, Winston Chen and Rohan Tatikonda.
7th grade:

Thank you to D'Ante' DuCasse', district Webmaster, and Karl Kindt, LMS Technology Coordinator, for the updated look to the blog posts.

HEALTHY THOUGHTS (from Nurse Patrick and Coach Wojtow)
As we begin to enter cold and flu season, please recall Ladue Schools' guidelines regarding ill students staying home from school. Please follow this link for details:
When to Keep Your Child Home From School

Fever is a symptom of illness and not an actual diagnosis. Fever usually indicates that the body is battling an infection. A child with a fever greater than 99.9 degrees Fahrenheit needs to stay home from school until the fever is gone for at least 24 hours without medication (acetaminophen or ibuprofen).
Tips to keep middle school students healthy:
·      Wash hands with soap and water frequently.
·      Avoid touching face (mouth, nose, eyes).
·      Eat a nutritious diet.
·      Get plenty of sleep.
·      Stay up to date with all recommended immunizations, including flu shots.
·      Keep students home from school when they are sick (refer to Ladue Schools' guidelines).
Students are not permitted to bring any medication (over the counter or prescription) to or from school.  All medication must be transported by an adult.  All medication (over the counter and / or prescription) requires a doctor's note or prescription label.  See the link below for further information.
Ladue Medication Policy
NURSE NOTES

There have been some immunization changes required by the state of Missouri that will affect students going into 8th grade next school year. Students entering 8th grade will now be required to have a meningitis immunization and a TDap immunization prior to starting 8th grade.  Here is a link to the DHSS site reflecting these requirements.
2016-2017 Missouri School Immunization Requirements
Your child may have already had both of these immunizations!  Please check with your pediatrician to see if these have been completed and, if not, get an appointment scheduled.  Please send the updated immunization records that reflect that your child has these immunizations. The nurse's office will accept these records immediately - no need to wait until summer!
You may email, fax, or send in a copy of the record to the nurse's office.

Hoops For Heart
On February 10 and 11 the LMS PE department will be hosting the annual Hoops For Heart fundraiser during PE classes.  Students will be bringing home information and collecting donations.
Families and schools are critical links in providing the foundation for cardiovascular wellness in our country.  By holding this event at our school each year, we help to raise awareness about heart-healthy living.  And help fund more lifesaving scientific research and critically needed education efforts.  Thank you.
Almost every family in America is touched by heart disease or stroke, and our school's contribution will significantly impact the fight against these devastating illnesses.
We hope that you, and your students find this lifesaving effort rewarding and enjoyable.  You are touching so many lives — and life is why the American Heart Association exists as an organization. Your help and support are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
The LMS PE Department
