January 29, 2016

Good afternoon.  I hope your week has gone well.

This is a reminder that I discourage team or teacher requests on registration forms for next year.  I cannot guarantee that our staffing and team compositions will remain constant from year to year.  Rather, I would prefer that you describe factors that you are aware of that best help your child learn (i.e. the type of instruction, or preferred learning style).  This section for your input is located on the back of the registration form.  With this information in hand, we can then use it to make team or teacher selections for the coming year.  Thank you.

Our Spring Portfolio Parent Conferences are scheduled for March 9 (3:40 - 7 PM) and March 10 (1:40 - 7 PM).
PLEASE NOTE: Conference times and format are different than in the fall.
An information sheet will be sent home with students on Monday, February 1 (and is attached to Blackboard Connect update email for your reference, as well as information about the format). Please follow instructions on the sheet to sign up.  The system will open on Monday, February 1 at 6:30 PM.  Please sign up ASAP as slots fill quickly.  We look forward to seeing you.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS

As School Counselor Week rapidly approaches, I want to publicly thank and express my appreciation for our counselors.  They not only address student’s individual issues and concerns, but also play a very big role in scheduling, planning school-wide events, and helping serve in building leadership roles.  In addition to other forms of recognition next week, it might be nice if your child can provide a note of thanks that can be placed on their office doors.

HEALTHY THOUGHTS (from Nurse Patrick and Coach Wojtow)

As we begin to enter cold and flu season, please recall Ladue Schools' guidelines regarding ill students staying home from school. Please follow this link for details:

Fever is a symptom of illness and not an actual diagnosis. Fever usually indicates that the body is battling an infection. A child with a fever greater than 99.9 degrees Fahrenheit needs to stay home from school until the fever is gone for at least 24 hours without medication (acetaminophen or ibuprofen).

Tips to keep middle school students healthy:
·      Wash hands with soap and water frequently.
·      Avoid touching face (mouth, nose, eyes).
·      Eat a nutritious diet.
·      Get plenty of sleep.
·      Stay up to date with all recommended immunizations, including flu shots.
·      Keep students home from school when they are sick (refer to Ladue Schools' guidelines).

Students are not permitted to bring any medication (over the counter or prescription) to or from school.  All medication must be transported by an adult.  All medication (over the counter and / or prescription) requires a doctor's note or prescription label.  See the link below for further information.

NURSE NOTES

There have been some immunization changes required by the state of Missouri that will affect students going into 8th grade next school year. Students entering 8th grade will now be required to have a meningitis immunization and a TDap immunization prior to starting 8th grade.  Here is a link to the DHSS site reflecting these requirements.
2016-2017 Missouri School Immunization Requirements

Your child may have already had both of these immunizations!  Please check with your pediatrician to see if these have been completed and, if not, get an appointment scheduled.  Please send the updated immunization records that reflect that your child has these immunizations. The nurse's office will accept these records immediately - no need to wait until summer!
You may email, fax, or send in a copy of the record to the nurse's office.

From the Library
Does your child have some favorite childhood books that he or she has outgrown?  In honor of Valentine's Day, we are soliciting donations of "Books We Love" and/or Barnes and Noble and Amazon gift certificates, to give to Washington Elementary in the Normandy School District.  Please bring your donations to the LMS library by February 5.  Feel free to purchase a new copy of the book to donate if you don't want to part with your old copy.

Hoops For Heart
On February 10 and 11 the LMS PE department will be hosting the annual Hoops For Heart fundraiser during PE classes.  Students will be bringing home information and collecting donations.
Families and schools are critical links in providing the foundation for cardiovascular wellness in our country.  By holding this event at our school each year, we help to raise awareness about heart-healthy living.  And help fund more lifesaving scientific research and critically needed education efforts.  Thank you.
Almost every family in America is touched by heart disease or stroke, and our school's contribution will significantly impact the fight against these devastating illnesses.
We hope that you, and your students find this lifesaving effort rewarding and enjoyable.  You are touching so many lives — and life is why the American Heart Association exists as an organization. Your help and support are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
The LMS PE Department

8th Grade Formal Planning
Please join the 8th grade formal committee on Wednesday, February 3, at 7 pm in the LMS library to discuss the upcoming dance.  We welcome all individuals interested in volunteering at this event.  We will discuss fundraising efforts and all volunteer opportunities.   If you are unable to attend but would like to help, or if you have any questions, please email the co-chairs:
